SHOWS PREVIEW • GLOBAL SHOWS PREVIEW • GLOBAL SHOWS PREVIEW • GLOBAL SHOWS P Co-Sponsors Industry Partners Comment As we put the final touches to this, the sixth issue of International Metal Tube magazine, we can look back at the past 12 months with pride and pleasure. Our launch coincided with the global economic downturn and some cynics predicted that we would not survive. In fact IMT has proven to be a popular medium for those who produce and process metal tube and pipe. The fresh approach and innovative design of IMT has led a good number of industry insiders to comment on how different IMT looks and how easy it is to read. This, coupled with the fact that readers are not distracted by the inclusion of plastic, has clearly contributed to our success. In this issue we offer a broad overview of some of the forthcoming trade shows, including Tube Southeast Asia and Fabtech/AWS. Both of these major events offer valuable insights into the industry’s latest developments, combined with an opportunity to sit down with machinery and equipment suppliers to discuss specific needs. Looking forward, we can hardly fail to notice that 2010 will be a Tube Düsseldorf year. This has to be seen as the industry’s premier showcase; as such it is not to be missed. I have been a fan since my first Tube Düsseldorf back in 1984 when I was with the old Tube International magazine. There were fewer than 300 tube exhibitors then, compared with more than 1,000 at the 2008 show… how times change. But while the number of exhibitors has grown so dramatically, it’s good to note that many of the industry characters I first encountered in the 1980s are still around. These veterans have a wealth of knowledge which they share with us on a regular basis. That’s what makes the metal tube and pipe industry what it is today – long may it continue. • The October/November issue of IMT, which will be published prior to Fabtech/AWS Chicago, will focus on tube and pipe mills, including roll forming lines, metal tube and pipe extrusion, drawing and reducing. IMT will be at Fabtech/AWS Chicago (stand 4050). It is sadly ironic that this coincides with the closure of the UK’s only large-scale wind turbine plant. Due to huge demand for alternative energy sources, producers of wind towers around the world often find it difficult to meet demand. Not only is the assembly process time consuming, but the welds must be of high quality to meet safety criteria. Most of the structural welds are multipass, using high welding currents and relatively slow speeds. The traditional welding method involves an operator monitoring the process remotely via a camera and positioning the welding torch manually using a joystick. This is tiring and prone to human error, and operators often have to leave the welding unattended for short periods to perform other tasks. Both of these issues can compromise weld integrity, leading to extensive rework. For more than 10 years Meta has successfully applied its vision systems to automate multipass welding at Dutch-based SIF partnership with AMET Inc at a number wind turbine plants in the US. They are being used to fabricate towers for on- and off-shore wind energy production, especially in the larger, next-generation structures. Time and manpower savings are allowing the manufacturers to work faster and more cost effectively with fewer weld defects. Meta has survived the normal ups and downs of a high-tech, start-up business to become a leading global supplier of vision systems for automated and mechanised welding. The company’s HQ and factory are in Eynsham, near Oxford, with subsidiaries in Canada and Germany. Originally research focused on vision systems for robotic welding in the automotive industry, and robot welding is still an important part of the company’s business. But it has expanded into many other areas including wind tower welding and following its departure in 1984 from the ‘dreaming spires’ of academe was Dr Wolfgang Kölbl, himself an Oxford graduate and now the company’s director of European sales. “When we spun the company out of the university we had little idea of what we were letting ourselves in for,” he admits. “Now, looking back over 25 years from our vantage point as a stable and prosperous international business, you cannot help feeling that we were incredibly naïve when we started it all.” Another Oxford graduate is Jonathan Moore, who joined the company in 1985 and is now its technical director. He recalls: “When we first started we used a mini computer that had its own air-conditioned room to develop the software. It was transferred onto chips and loaded into a big electronics rack that formed part of each system. In contrast, later this year we will launch a new product range that will have far more computing capability inside the sensor head itself. “One does not appreciate how far technology has moved on until you take a moment at a milestone like this to look back.” Managing director Bob Beattie, who also joined the company in 1985, says: “Meta is a very good example of the way in which even relatively small businesses have had to globalise to prosper. We have sold well over 2,000 systems into six continents and exports account for over 95% of turnover. “Our traditional markets have been Europe, particularly the automotive industry in Germany. However, India and China have been important markets for the past few years and at the moment China seems to be weathering the economic storm better than most. “We will continue to focus on providing intelligent, laser vision systems for automated and mechanised welding and are prepared to do so anywhere in the world.” More information on Meta Vision Systems at: tel: +44 1865 887900 fax: +441865 887901 sales@meta-mvs.com www.meta-mvs.com The supply of laser vision systems for improving welding speed and quality in wind tower manufacture is one reason for Meta’s continued success in its 25th year. The aerospace company uses educational tours demonstrating The first tour, in July, took it to all-electric benders to achieve how manufacturers can reap two advanced users: an aerospace single-stage fabrication of extremely complex part shapes, often using demanding materials such as titanium tubing where any scrap is extremely expensive. For the automotive manufacturer, the key challenge is reducing the cost of parts production while handing a wider range of tube sizes. Unison's next tours are planned for October 2009 and January 2010; they will incorporate technical workshops tailored to each visitor's application requirements and a reception at the House of Commons. Unison's Alan Pickering says: "All-electric, servomotor-controlled bending offers a range of advantages compared with traditional hydraulically powered machinery, including very fast and repeatable set-up that can virtually eliminate scrap, precise and flexible control over the complete bending cycle, and energy savings. "All-electric machines can pay for themselves in weeks, and these tours are designed to demonstrate their capability firsthand – from the perspective of clever users." • To enrol on the tour see www.unisonltd.com/tour. The Breeze 170 can generate a bending torque of 135,000Nm - nearly 50% more than the company's previously most powerful 150mm machine. It brings the process flexibility and operational advantages of software-controlled set-up and bending to a new class of heavy-duty applications. As such the Breeze 170 is likely to open up new application areas in aerospace and shipbuilding. The machine's ability to accommodate such large diameter tubing, combined with its power and precision bending capabilities, make it particularly suitable for handling lightweight high-strength ducting manufactured from specialist materials such as commercially pure (CP) titanium, titanium alloys and stainless steel. Fast, software-controlled setup enables the Breeze 170 to handle small batches and one-off jobs with particular efficiency. A major advantage is accurate, programmable control of the rotary draw bending process. The machine can accommodate tubing with a wall thickness of up to 3mm and can produce bends of up to 180º with a bending speed of up to 10º/sec. It can also perform bending operations extremely The Unibend slowly, which is a critical machine control attribute for the precision forming of titanium. The Breeze 170 is designed specifically for absolute rigidity, using fast-acting closed-loop servo control to deliver repeatability of ±0.1º on both the bend angle and the bend plane. Bending accuracy is further supported by a unique wiper die system which features precision set-up facilities. software supplied with the Breeze 170 runs under Windows XP or Vista on any industry-standard PC. This software has evolved steadily since Unison produced the world's first all-electric tube bending machine in 1994, and is now widely acknowledged to be one of the most versatile tube-bending packages on the market. Unlike traditional hydraulically Six at a time – 11,000 cuts per hour Kent Corporation is offering the New Bewo high speed cold saw. The SCF-90 cuts up to six tubes simultaneously to give a cut rate of up to 11,000 per hour. The saw head cuts upward which leaves most chips below and requires less cutting force. The hydraulic helical saw head is extremely robust with minimal backlash. The saw blades is variable and the saw head features proportional feed through the tube to optimise cut quality, blade life, and production rates. The tubes are fed via a servo feed that ensures accuracy and enables up to 10 different lengths to be cut from a single stock length of tube. The main control panel automatically selects the most efficient settings based on the job that is typed in; all settings are quick and automatically controlled at the panel. Advanced features include fully automated tube sensing and clamping, which significantly reduce setup times. The software also includes remote diagnostic aids which enable Unison's engineering team to quickly resolve any bending problems or machine performance issues at customers' sites. A software 'black box' automatically stores the last 500 instructions entered by the operator as well as details of machinery positions from the servo motor sensors. This allows Unison to help users optimise their processes and to provide remote maintenance services. Tube bending operations can be programmed in three ways: . Programs can be generated automatically by transferring data from CAD software files Unison has interfaces for all popular CAD packages and will develop interfaces for any others that are required, including a manufacturer's proprietary design software. . A simple programming template is available, enabling a user to create a program by entering the actuation provides significant performance benefits in terms of energy consumption, repeatability and noise reduction. The actuation elements of the machine only draw appreciable current when a bend is being made, reducing energy consumption significantly; at all other times, the Breeze 170 consumes less than 1.5kW/hr. Noise is also measurably reduced, to around 50-60 dB, which is equivalent to normal voice level. The all-welded Compabloc 120 can withstand pressures of up to 42 barg which makes it ideal for a wide range of duties in sectors such as oil and gas, refineries, power, petrochemicals, chemicals and pulp and paper. In many applications, a single Compabloc 120 will be able to replace more than one large shell and tube exchanger because of its superior performance, providing the same or greater capacity for a lower cost. The size of an interchanger can be cut by as much as 80%. A combination of high turbulence and true counter-current flow offers maximum heat recovery, leading to significant energy savings, because energy can be recovered and recycled. The Compabloc principle is simple. Liquids or vapours flow through channels between corrugated plates, creating a high degree of turbulence in the media, resulting in enhanced heat transfer. A counter-current flow facilitates crossing temperature programmes, in which the cold fluid can be heated to temperatures very close to those of the hot fluid. The closer the temperatures of the two fluids, the more heat is recovered. The Compabloc 120 also benefits the environment, because less steam (most commonly generated by fossil fuels) is required in the process. This, in turn, cuts CO2 emissions from the plant.
